Petition for Eutelsat to Resume NTDTV Broadcast in Asia
On June 16, 2008, Eutelsat SA abruptly terminated the broadcast of New Tang Dynasty Television (NTDTV) over mainland China under the guise of a “power anomaly” to its W5 satellite. On July 10, Paris based Reporters Sans Frontiere (RSF) published an investigative report, revealing the reason behind NTDTV’s broadcast interruption not to be technical as Eutelsat claimed, but a pre-meditated political move to appease the Chinese Communist government. In order to curry favor with Beijing and pave the way for future business deals, Eutelsat Chairman and CEO Giuliano Berretta chose to shut down the broadcast of NTDTV mere weeks before the start of the Olympics. At a time when the Chinese people’s need for uncensored information is the greatest, Eutelsat’s action made it an accomplice to the totalitarian Chinese Communist Party in aiding and abetting the suppression of press freedom in China. At the same time, VOA has left W5 on July 31, 2008 which gives Eutelsat the replacement capacity to broadcast NTDTV signal. It is the time for Eutelsat to fulfill its contractual obligation and resume NTDTV broadcast to China now. We call on the international community, media, supporters of press freedom, and especially employees, board members, and shareholders of Eutelsat, to help us defend freedom. Let us work together to defeat Mr. Berretta’s conspiracy, and re-open the only window of free information above China. Let the millions of Chinese people viewers again receive NTDTV broadcast so they can stay abreast of real current events around them and in the world.
