I am a happy survivor of guiding two young men(now in college)through adolescence and I have a grandson that lives with me that thinks he is 7 going on 17. I also have nieces and nephews that through life situations, have required my active involvement in their upbringing. In addition, I have worked with children and teenagers professionally since 1978. I am an advanced practice registered nurse and have worked primarily in various settings that take care of adolescents and their families. I have progressed through the ranks of nursing and education over the years, always with some focus on adolescents, and received much specialized training in the issues of adolescence and their mental, physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual health. I have a specialized certification in nursing of children and adolescents with psychiatric/mental health disorders. More than that, I have a passion for helping families figure out how the strengths they already have can help an adolescent through the minefield of changes that come with that period in life.
After years of conventional medical training, I embarked upon a return to more holistic and cultural ways of healing. My Native American culture was my guide for how to bring up my own children as a single parent and it certainly took the village around me to achieve that with success. I believe our culture is our blueprint for health and healing and that it should be part of any action that proposes change within family systems.
